Dartside Scenics - Dioramas and Models
Великобритания
Добавлен 5 май 2021
I am a diorama and model creator based in Totnes, Devon. The inspiration for my dioramas originates from the stunning scenery surrounding the River Dart - from the high points on Dartmoor, through the South Hams and out to the sea at the mouth of the river in Dartmouth.
These dioramas are all created using my preferred 1:76 scale and may be of interest to anyone wanting to add to their dioramas, model railway or war gaming layouts. If you’re like me, you might simply enjoy using creative skills to relax and switch off after a busy day.
I try to make my dioramas as realistic as possible and enjoy taking them outside into the areas that inspire me, to try and blend them into their real world surroundings. I hope the finished dioramas leave you wondering where the diorama finishes and where reality begins…
By watching my videos, I hope you will see how easy it is to create something like this yourself and be inspired to have a go.

Nice Intro Reel for the channel, Andy. Well done. Have a fantastic weekend. Cheers.
Thanks mate, have a great week 😁
I am keen to see more progress on your SDR model, i was fortunate to accompany my mum who has dementia on a 'memory train' on the SDR a couple of days ago, it was great for my mum and myself as we had not been on it since i was a kid in the 80s , it cost only a couple of pounds each and i was pleasantly reminded of how beautiful that line is. I am inspired to create a slice of Devon in miniature as i fear this wonderful place is changing too fast and fear we may loose much of it. I am hopeful to adopt some of your techniques in creating my vision. It will be a far cry from the ww1 battlefields i usually make.
I'm really pleased you enjoyed the memory train with your mum - the SDR is a beautiful place to visit. You should definitely make a model inspired by Devon, it's a very rewarding experience.
Nice review, been considering the Creality Laser cutters for a good while now, and this looks like everything I'd need. I just need to finish the workshop so it will have a home, lol
Sounds exciting, good luck with the workshop 👍🏻
I have been subscribed for a while and therefore found this disappointing to not have any new content. I’m sure it’s to attract new subscribers and I wish you well in that endeavour. Hopefully we will get a proper video very soon as they are always worth the wait.
Hi Laurence. Firstly, thank you for supporting the channel. I created this video to give a summary of what the channel is really about as I feel I have moved away from it recently due to product reviews. I completely understand your frustration and it’s a fair point. I won’t bore you with all the reasons but a very busy job and family life are my priority and it doesn’t leave a huge amount of time for model making. I feel like I’ll soon be able to have the time and motivation to start creating 😁
Hiya, it looks like you've got some cool content. I will have a look tomorrow when I've got some time. I've been watching Boomer Diorama recently. I particularly enjoyed his Silver Creek Chronicles playlist. He's definitely changed the way I think about materials and model making methods.
Thank you 👍🏻. I agree, Boomer diorama is a brilliant channel and deserves to have more subscribers.
@@DartsideScenics that's true,

Thanks Fred 😊
Hooked already - but thank you.!
Thanks Alex!! 😁
Ooh... foreshadowing perhaps? 😃

Hi Andy, great overview of your superb scenic and modelling skills! Cheers Gary
Thanks Gary! I hope you’re well 👍🏻
Definitely the best modeller out there’s Always a pleasure watching your videos Andy ❤
Thank you so much Craig. You, Sam and others have inspired and encouraged so many modellers through the Facebook group. You should be very proud of everything you have done 👍🏻
@@DartsideScenics very kind words Andy.
Youve a true talent sir
You’re too kind Justin 😊
Its a good build for the scale of the aircraft, but surely more of the fence would have been damaged of gone. The wings would have taken them out... But like I said for the scale well done..
That fence must be made of rubber! 🤣
@@DartsideScenics Aye it must be lol
great model "shit tons of patience" but your crenellations are far too lumpy and rough, they should be smooth stone.
Shit tons of patience but I created a ton of shit!! 😂
@@DartsideScenics 😜naaa its a really impressive castle for sure.
This is a bit of a long shot but do you think you would consider allowing people to hire the scanner from you ? (UK based) I can't afford go buy the otter outright and want to experiment with a couple of hobby ideas 😆 It was a great video showcasing the product. 👍
Thanks for watching. I haven’t really thought about hiring but it’s a good idea. If I get another to use, I might consider hiring out this one.
When I export there are only two options on a Mac. Do you show 4 on yours on being an STL file type?
Hi Steven. I hadn't looked at this yet as I don't have a 3D printer. It looks like the options I have on Windows and Mac are the same. PLY, STL and OBJ.
@@DartsideScenics I have got a few 3D printers, two creality ender 3's that I don't use now as I got an Adventurer M5 which I got for £250 from their website which was a good price, the printer is fast and very easy to use, unlike the creality types which takes some time setting up, then I got the scanner for something else and also got an Ellegoo Neptune max for doing full sized heads for a project I am working on. I think the scanner and the more up-to-date printers really make the possibilities of creating something that can be used by others an incredible opportunity for commercial and hobby shenanigans. I would recommend the Adventurer M5 as a great starting point for quick, easy and reliable prints. I printed a full sized head scn on the ellegoo that took a few days and 1.2 reels of filament as the head was simply filled in, but I had also used blender to smooth out the surfaces of the scan which worked out quite amazingly. I'll be using the idea to print a new dummy head microphone design, then cover the prints in a very thin coat of rubber, then to cast it, and then use the mother mould for making fibreglass heads, with luck, I can't believe that there is this technology that is so easy to get to enable laymen folk to have wonderful opportunities to do so much with their computers these days, its amazing really. Thanks for the video, I was unaware of the merge facility!
Thanks for this information - I'm very new to this so it's very useful to have recommendations. I agree that it's amazing what you can create at home with the technology available.
That’s amazing mate.
Cheers Craig 😁
New to the channel. Glad to see a fellow laser cutting enthusiast. Have you used chipboard on any project?
I’ve tried quite a few things but not chipboard. Have you?
@@DartsideScenics Yeah! I typically work with 1/16th but it comes in thicker sizes. Tacky glue is all that’s needed to adhered pieces together too
Very inspiring for my first railway build . Some great tips and very talented. Thanks for sharing your process. - new favourite RUclips channel.
Thank you for your kind words. Good luck with your first railway build 👍🏻
Hello, I'm going to buy it, will it be a good choice?
Thanks for watching. Personally, I really like this model as its improvement on the other two I have reviewed. It depends on what you will use it for and if you are satisfied it's worth the investment. I am very aware that it's a lot of money but you can produce some amazing things with it. I have seen other reviews on RUclips which seem very positive so it's worth looking at some of those to see what else you can do with it. Also, you need the Lightburn software which is around £50. If you're a creative person, it's a very enjoyable process. I just took some time to learn, make some mistakes and soon found my skills improving. gozbx.com/r/OXKj65wMndPF Discount Code:FNPALL10
So does it need to be 9V AC? If that's the case could you please share with us the 9V transformer you purchased. Cheers
The advice I received suggests a 9v to 12v regulated DC supply. Gaugemaster offer one here amzn.to/3xt1IUn
Fantastic work! What are the dimensions of it and is it done to a scale?
Thanks Alex! I can't remember the dimensions but it's 1:76 scale
That’s how I wire my red green signals BUT DAPOL said I can’t do this without buying another box what’s the story yours worked well I have the DCC concepts alpha up digital. Points have their own bus. Dccc has its own buss and accessories have theirs own bus according to your method which is similar to what I do with the red green leds wired directly off the point motor with a diode this seems like a winner. Great content.
Thanks for watching. I have received some varied advice on this so can email you the details if it helps. It was all working for me but I haven't touched it for some time and I think there is a question mark over the signal motor burning out. Contact me on dartsidescenics@gmail.com 😀
@@DartsideScenics will do I can also share the soloution that I have been revised and provided from DCC CONCEPTS like you I have had a great relationship with the crew there which is better than that from Dapol themselves lol
Love this what a cool idea thanks for sharing the process and creativity
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
This is amazing! How much did it cost to build this?
Thank you!!😊 I think it was £30-40 in materials
@@DartsideScenics great thank you, keep up the amazing work!
Bordering on brilliant 😊
Thank you! 😁
In the final photos it really could be real, incredible skills - and patience!
Thank you, I really appreciate your comments 😊
Looks amazing. Just wondering if, since the Spit is a low wing plane, if it would not have created a wider hole when breaching the fence. Although English fences might be tougher than usual ;-)
Yep, the English fences are indestructible!! 😂😉
@@DartsideScenics "Stiff upper lip" applies to fences too, right? ;-)
@@rc-fannl7364 😂
Amazing how relaxing your videos are. I could watch and listen to you all day.
Thank you, that’s very kind 😊
Im building a point to point layout .... This is a great idea to display a passenger train along the back ground
👍🏻
I've been down this path many many times before - creating with qcad, then porting over and cutting. I can't help feel that 3d printing is the new way forward, shadowing laser cutting?
I think you can do a lot more with 3d printing but I still believe people enjoy the process of making laser cut and plastic kits.
What scale was it built to?
1:76 👍🏻
@@DartsideScenics thanks. Incredible detail.
@@jamesfields2916 thanks James 😊
Went to Postbridge today, remembered how good your work on this is, inspired!
It’s a lovely place isn’t it. Thank you for your kind comment 😊
Wow that laser printer is so accurate. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks John, they are great tools
Hello, if you hadn't been sent this. Would you part with £1000+ of your own money to get it? Secondly, if you've never done graphic design is it easy to create a meaningful design for it to cut?
Hi Tim. If I could afford it, I would buy it as I really enjoy the process. However, I can’t really afford to buy one at the moment so realise I’m fortunate to have it. If you are thinking of making kits to sell, there is potential to get your money back fairly quickly. I’m not a graphic designer (I’m sure you can tell!!) but have managed some nice work with basic knowledge of the Lightburn software. I have a creative imagination so may find it easier than some to put it together.
A delight to watch Andy 👌🏻
Thanks Craig 😊
damn…. i need one of those…. 😂
😂
Jesus they're sending these out to Everyone huh. You're like the 10th channel I'm subscribed to that's done a review on this machine in the last week or so. Congrats on the acquisition though.
I know what you mean - maybe there’s a new product on the way and they are getting rid of stock! Seriously though, I do feel fortunate to have this machine due to the possibilities. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
I used to mix fine sand into my paint to create texture, do you do anything similar or different to achieve detailed textures ? Im taking road surfaces and walls etc.
I think your fine sand mix is very similar to the Ammo asphalt paint (but much cheaper to make!!). I looked into road texture in my last video but I can’t say I was satisfied with any of my attempts!
@@DartsideScenics thanks, new to your channel ! I did use 00 scale track ballast mixed with a thick ish acrylic paint for a Devon lane, it wasn't too bad.
It looks like you can do some wonderful things with this equipment. I enjoyed building model buildings but could only afford the basic scalpel and scissors but it was impressed seeing what I could build including a miniature of Buckfastleigh circa 1910 from cereal packaging, It was good enough to get me into college once upon a time. I'm guessing equipment such as this can expand the verity and quality of your models. I'd love to see more of what you have created with this thing.
Thank you. I think a lot of people think it’s ’cheating’ but I really like the extra detail you can achieve. However, it’s often rewarding to create something manually, with basic materials.
Great video, thanks. How well would it work for smaller scales, like 1:120 for example?
Thank you. I think the sash windows would be difficult in 1;120 so might need to be oversized to ensure strength. I’m looking forward to experimenting!
Damn that's one impressive cutter, love that you chose The Merchants House, it turned out beautifully, it's such an interesting building, the Wife and I spent a fantastic week in Dartmouth last year, loved the place and the surrounding countryside and of course the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh.
Thanks Simon. Yes, Dartmouth is a lovely place to visit 😊
👌👍👍👍
